Netflix game business starts high-profile and falls into silence.

At the beginning of this year, Netflix announced his game plan, and the new boss Alain Tascan promised to launch a multiparty game, a children’s game and a new one based on Netflix IP. Alain Taskan, who had previously served as Epic Games executive, took over the Netflix game in July 2024 and stated at the GDC Conference in March that the “Big Screen” game was still on the agenda and that more “surprising” surprises would be introduced.

Alan Tascan had previously revealed that Netflix was in the early stages of building a wider platform for games, and even planned to create products in the area of social games for Fort Night, Roblox or My World. He emphasized that Netflix had “resistence and determination” in the area of long-term deep-farming. After the noise, however, Netflix has been quiet since April, when World of Peppa Pig and Thronglets, a derivative of the Black Mirror series, were released. Appmagic data show that, although not surprising, the two games are the most successful of Netflix to date. Children download about 2.5 million times to Piggy Pecs World and 2.3 million times to Thronglets for adults.

Netflix has since fallen into silence, and only two new works have been introduced since the end of April. “Bloood Line: A Rebel Moon”, which came on line in July, was created by the classic MOBA-swap Vengeance developer Super Evil Megacorp, a derivative of Zack Schneider’s film, The Moon Rebel. “Underwatermelon: Fruit Merge” was published on 10 September and came from the Finnish studio Next Games, acquired in 2022. According to Appmagic, the former has been installed approximately 230,000 times since July, while the latter has been downloaded cumulatively about 166,000 times. The total number of Netflix games currently stands at about 100, only half of Apple Arcade, which has launched a game subscription service since September 2019. Netflix has been expanding its game since 2021, but this summer part of the game began to withdraw from subscription services, including more than 20 well-known independent games such as Hades’ Time Fantasia and the Memorial Valley series.

In addition to the small number of games on the horizon, recruitment information indicates that Netflix is actively expanding its game team and has paid high salaries for key positions. Among them, the Generating AI Director is paid up to $840,000 per year, the New Product Management Director is paid up to $0.7 million per year, and the Director of the party game studio is paid up to $620,000 per year. The majority of jobs are in Los Angeles or California, where pay for teleworking is significantly lower. The Finnish subsidiary Next Games and the low-profile Moonloot studio are also recruiting 2D/3D artists.
