Nintendo accelerates Switch 2 production: the target for the fiscal year is 20 million, 20 per cent higher than publicly expected

According to Bloomberg, Nintendo has requested partners and spare parts suppliers to produce 20 million Switch 2 hosts in the current fiscal year (as of March 2027), about 20 per cent higher than the expected public sales early this month.

Informed sources revealed that the latest production plans had not yet been finalized and could be adjusted to market demand. However, the current plan shows that the company is confident that its upcoming games will effectively stimulate Switch 2 sales.

Nintendo is used to publishing conservative sales forecasts at the beginning of the fiscal year and then following up beyond projections, a common practice of Japanese enterprises. Just a year ago, Nintendo publicly estimated the sales of Switch 2 for the previous fiscal year at 15 million, which eventually reached 990,000. At the beginning of May, Nintendo was expected to sell 16.5 million copies of Switch 2 for the current fiscal year.

Industry analysts point out that low early projections are part of Nintendo ‘ s long-term financial strategy. According to the Tokyo-based industry analyst, Serkan Toto: “For them, a fiscal year just ended is an excellent example when lower data are given and then more than done, without any real risk”.

Switch 2 has repeatedly broken sales records since it was listed last June. The day before Nintendo also announced an increase in the price of the mainframe, triggering a new wave of shopping in Japan. In addition to the cost escalation caused by the continuing global memory shortfall, Switch 2 will increase from $450 to $500 in September.

Switch 2 owns a number of hot games, such as ” Joo Chig Kong: Bananza ” , ” Boggle Dream Legend Z-A ” , and ” Bogopia ” , which unexpectedly became a global hotspot this spring. According to the Market Tracking Agency, Circana, the best-selling game in the United States in April was another internally produced product from Nintendo, Friends Gathering: Dream Living, which sold $41 million in the United States. In Japan, Famiton data show that in the two weeks up to 10 May, Switch 2 sales in the country more than quadrupled, and a number of shops are implementing a policy of limiting the purchase of one person per person.

Nintendo doesn’t have a single generation of hosts as well as the first-generation Switch fire that was released in 2017, and the Switch 2 hosts still need an epic work like the Zelda Legend: The Passion of the Desert to attract players. However, analysts believe that Nintendo will overcome the disadvantages of rising prices and the possible lack of a new heavy work in the Super Mario series.

“Consumers will eventually get used to higher prices, and Nintendo has creative ways of mitigating shocks, for example, through tied sales,” Serkan Toto says. “I predict that the volume of Switch 2 will reach 18 million in the current fiscal year, and I would not be surprised if the actual number was higher.”
